TOLEDO BALLET TO OFFER MIDDLE EASTERN DANCE WORKSHOPS

Toledo Ballet is offering 2 six-week Middle Eastern Dance workshops, one for adults 18 and up and one for ages 11-17. The workshops, running from April 25 – June 7, will be taught by Brooke Fasnaugh. Ms Fasnaugh choreographed selected Middle Eastern dances in Toledo Ballet’s recent original spring production at the Valentine, “If These Walls Could Dance.”

Fasnaugh began her study in Middle Eastern dance with Lebanese dancers Lorna and Ann Marie Zilba, formerly of Toledo Ballet. She continued her training under master performer and instructor Aegela, a former dancer in the Mahmoud Reda troupe and one of only eleven foreigners ever to be awarded the lifetime performer’s license by the Egyptian Ministry of Culture. Ms. Fasnaugh eventually taught at the Aegela Center for Middle Eastern Dance, one of the largest schools of its kind in America. She furthered her studies under Aida Adawi of San Francisco, former protégé of the legendary Jamila Salimpour. For more information click here to download the PDF .

TOLEDO BALLET RECEIVES AWARD FOR ADAPTIVE DANCE Toledo Ballet received a $6,000 grant from the Gretchen Gotthart Skeldon Fund for its Adaptive Dance program. The fund was created in memory of Gretchen Gotthart Skeldon who lost her battle with breast cancer two years ago. One of the Fund’s committee members, Gretchen DeBacker, explained, “The mission of the Gretchen Gotthart Skeldon Fund is simply to support the things Gretchen loved and believed in during her life. One of her interests was children with disabilities, as her own daughter, Lily, has special needs. The Adaptive Dance program at Toledo Ballet is the perfect fit. We are excited to support such an amazing and worthwhile program.” Toledo Ballet’s Adaptive Dance program, implemented in fall 2009, offers a dance experience for children with Down syndrome. The program has grown to include two age groups – children ages 7 – 11 and those 12 and older. Toledo Ballet Executive Director Mari Davies said, “Adaptive Dance classes are always a highlight for me because of the contagious joy that unravels when those children are dancing. They are improving muscle tone, motor skills, and balance while developing an appreciation of music and rhythm. At the same time, they are developing emotional well-being and social skills in a safe environment. This grant ensures that no child with Down syndrome will be turned away because they could not afford it. Toledo Ballet is grateful to this fund for making that possible.”

Open Auditions for
Spring 2012 Production

Toledo Ballet will hold open auditions Saturday, December 17, 2011 for Artistic Director Michael Lang’s 2012 spring production, If These Walls Could Dance. Performances will be held Friday, March 24 and Saturday, March 25 at the Valentine Theatre and will celebrate the much beloved Paul Geiger mural mounted in the Valentine’s Grand Lobby. The audition schedule is as follows:

Saturday, December 17, 2011 at Toledo Ballet Studios

2:00-3:30 pm Ballet Dancers (if on pointe, bring pointe shoes)
Toledo Ballet Students Levels:
Intermediate II, Advanced & Company

Non Toledo Ballet Students:
Female & Male, Ages 13 & up

3:30-5:00 pm Contemporary/Jazz Dancers
Toledo Ballet Students Levels:
Intermediate II, Advanced & Company

Non Toledo Ballet Students:
Female & Male, ages 13 & up

5:00-6:30 pm Dancers

The room was filled with little girls in taffeta, velvet and satin as they excitedly awaited their turn to have their photos taken with stars of Toledo Ballet’s 71st annual NUTCRACKER. From Clara to a Snowflake to Harlequin and Columbine, members of this year’s cast strolled around, meeting and greeting their young fans and posing for hundreds of photos as parents snapped images that most likely will end up on a holiday greeting card or framed on some little girls’ nightstands. Held at the Toledo Club, the event sold out several days before the November 13 event. Master storyteller Condessa Croninger gathered the star-struck youngsters around her as she told the story of NUTCRACKER while demonstrating certain concepts inherent to ballet such as mime. Storytelling was followed by beverages and pastries, and the event was topped off with a raffle, with Toledo Ballet’s Founder and Artistic Director Emerita Marie Vogt winning a baking gift package. The event, coordinated by Toledo Ballet mother Donna Decker, hosted over 120 children and their guardians. Toledo Ballet’s 71st annual NUTCRACKER, accompanied by the Toledo Symphony, runs December 10, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. and December 11 at 2 p.m. at the Stranahan Theater. The Vogt – Cernonok Boys' Ballet Scholarship Program

Toledo Ballet offers 100% underwriting for boys ages 7 and older who want to study classical ballet. Named for Toledo Ballet's founder / artistic director emerita Marie Vogt and her long-time associate Velta Cernonok, this program affords young men the opportunity to explore ballet for the pure sake of the art, or for improving athletic skills such as flexibility, stamina, and balance. Many professional athletes take ballet to gain that advantage on the field or court.

“...Ann Heckler says she had always been interested in extending classes to students with special needs, and then she heard about a program in Boston that offered ballet lessons for young people with Down Syndrome. It didn't take long for Heckler to fly to Boston to get a first hand visit and what she returned to Toledo with was motivation to do the same thing here with Boston's curriculum guide and their permission to use it. That was two years ago, and Ann is now in her second year of teaching ballet to Down Syndrome youth in the Toledo area. ‘I love it, it's great motivation, I think it's great’, says Sandy-Wyley Steward, whose 18 year old son Tyler has been a student this year. ‘Having the Toledo Ballet offer this class for him provides motor skills, functional movement and he's off the couch, he's sweating, he's moving and that's a good thing.’”
